'Action for Autism' performance at Strictly Wandsworth

MW Post FI - SW Performance

Last Saturday, 26th April, we were bursting with pride as our 'Action for Autism' group took to the festival mainstage and joined a cast of 200 dancers in the mass performance centrepiece as part of 'Strictly Wandsworth', the launch event for Wandsworth, London Borough of Culture. Not only did our group perform but were chosen to close the whole piece, as pictured centre stage in the finale.

We are so proud of their achievement. Event producer Jenna Lee said “The group really shone bright— they were the perfect ending to the main performance”

Four members of the group were also chosen for the event official photograph with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, Justine Simons OBE, London’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries and event host, Oti Mabuse, two times Strictly winner and TV Judge.

The event was a feast of dance on the main stage bringing together 200 dancers from 22 local organisations and the audience numbered more than 3,000, many of them dancing along in the sunshine. The event started with the forming of a 'W' by the performers of the mass celebration dance participance performance, the centrepiece of the afternoon, which involved our own 'Action for Autism' group.

The centrepiece of the afternoon was the mass dance celebration created by chereographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles MBE (the visionary behind movement performances for global events including the London 2012 Olympic Games, Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant, and Manchester International Festival) involving 16 dance organisations across Wandsworth including:

  • Ashley Dance Academy
  • The Baked Bean Charity

  • MovementWorks® 'Action for Autism'
  • Nine Elms Arts Ministry
  • Nuffield Health
  • Pointe Black
  • The Royal Academy of Dance

Choreographer Patience J, (Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor), collaborated with Jeanefer Jean-Charles and Jenna Lee, Event Producer and Artistic Director  of London Children's Ballet. to create a fun, dynamic dance, the event finale, for everyone to join in which included Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London YouTube clip)

Other attractions included a DJ Set by Gok Wan and performances by Bolly Flex, the Country Roses, Gully LDN, Lets Dance (Fairytale Ballet) and the Lindy Hop Company.

About 'Action for Autism'
We have been running our 'Action for Autism' projects for over five years and have made a difference to so many people thanks to funding received from various organisations including the Mayor of London, Sports Unite, Better London, Wandsworth Council Grant Funding and currently (from February 2025) the Wandsworth Council Arts for Health and Wellbeing.

These weekly Autism Movement Therapy® sessions for young people aged between 11 - 18 years are held weekly after school hours at Tooting Leisure Centre during term-time. Please visit our Events Calendar for the confirmed dates of the sessions.

If you would your child to join this group and take part in these sessions, then please contact us either by completing the form on our 'Action for Autism' project page or via email: info@movementworks.org

This project is now running until December 2025 and there is also the opportunity to take part in  Wandsworth Arts Festival, Royal Academy Community Day of Dance in June, the Happy Streets Festival in early July and the Liberty Festival in September, for those young people wishing to take a performative role.
