Event Series Event Series: ‘Action for Autism

‘Action for Autism

11 September @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm BST

Join us for our weekly 'Action for Autism' Community Engagement Project!

Aimed at autistic young people aged 11 - 18 years, these weekly Autism Movement Therapy® classes are proven to make a difference to the young people who attend. Increased confidence, reducing anxiety and improving behaviour at home and school are just a few of the results that have been reported by their parent/carers.

We have been successfully delivering this project for over five years and have reached so many young people in this time. To find out more about how to register for this current cohort and also to see some of the testimonials and details from past years, please visit our dedicated webpage.

"She communicates non-verbally with teachers, which she would not do before. She is more into conversations via text with her friends. Before she was on her own – but now is friends at lunchtimes etc."

Sessions are held weekly (term time only) on a Wednesday afternoon at 4.30 p.m. in the Studio at Tooting Leisure Centre. Parent./carers are required to register their young person for the programme and a small refundable deposit of £25 plus an admin fee of £20 is required, other than that the sessions are free to attend. Once enrolled in the project there is an expectation that the young person will attend weekly to get the maximum benefit. Places are limited so will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

"Every week sessions gave my daughter routine with physical activities. Having a hard year at school (studying for GCSE) these sessions allow her to focus on her body / music / new friends not just on a one session but every Wednesday."

The current cohort also took part in our 'Artistes for Autism' project, which provided them with a performance opportunities whether they were on stage or supporting back stage.

"He hasn’t done anything like that before. For the first time he performed on the stage in front of the audience and I know he enjoyed being on the stage. I was really proud of him, he surprised me a lot with his confidence and ability to deal with his difficulties. To be honest I was crying. I got so emotional to see him dancing in front of strange people, not worried"

Background
Our 'Action for Autism' project returned in October 2023 thanks to funding received from Wandsworth Council as part of the Arts for Health and Wellbeing Fund. This funding meant that would could provide this Community Class until the beginning of February 2024. It was evident from the participants that this project was essential to them, so we were delighted when we were successful in receiving further funding from the Wandsworth Council Grant Fund, which has secured the sessions for a further year, until the end of February 2025.
